Joana Vieira

Senior Researcher at ForestWISE

Joana Vieira is a Senior Researcher at ForestWISE – Collaborative Laboratory for Integrated Forest & Fire Management, in Vila Real, and an integrated researcher at the Centre for Functional Ecology of the University of Coimbra. She holds a Ph.D. in Biology (University of Coimbra, 2013) and a master in Ecology (University of Coimbra, 2008).

In the last 20 years, she has developed research in dendrochronology, cambial activity and wood formation of Mediterranean tree species. She has studied how the ongoing global climate change affects the seasonal activity of the vascular cambium and its ability to capture carbon, in maritime pine trees (Pinus pinaster Ait.). The main goal of her research was to understand the influence of climate on wood formation to ensure a sustainable future for Mediterranean pine forests. She is currently working on promoting and adding-value to non-wood forestry products to improve forest resilience to rural fires. Her research interests are forest and fire management, forest ecology, non-wood forestry products and forest resilience to global climate change. Joana Vieira has an h-index of 16, with 27 articles published in peer-reviewed journals, gathering more than 1000 citations.
